Alaska.
-
Determine the role
of educators, telecommunication companies, community organizations,

Blackboard
Blackboard (current version 6.0)
Blackboard is an Internet-based course management system that is used by
UAA instructors to supplement traditional, on-campus instruction and to
teach distance education courses. Most UAA instructors use Blackboard to
post course materials (e.g., syllabi, handouts, links, etc.) in an
online environment. Other instructors employ Blackboard more
extensively, using it to administer exams, to host class discussions, to
facilitate group projects, etc.

CMS
Course Management System
A course management system (CMS) or learning management system (LMS)is
sometimes described as the 'glue' that holds courses, developers,
instructors, and students together. Blackboard or WebCT are examples of
a CMS/LMS. The core of a CMS/LMS is:
-
Coordinating course
registration
-
Scheduling
-
Tracking
-
Assessment
-
Testing
The CMS
would also be a vehicle for distributing information and facilitate
communication.
Courses
could be authored in any Web editor or author tool in most CMS
environments. Some CMS or LMS might restrict the kinds of courses that
can be offered within the framework.
There are
some corporations that use CMS/LMS so they can provide courses for the
employees, track the results. The LMS would interface with the
corporation's employee database.

Copyright
Copyright
http://hosting.uaa.alaska.edu/designteam/teach_act/index.html
(proposed UA copyright policy for be in place to take advance of TEACH

Many universities are also living by the rule that claims "what is legal
in the traditional, face-to-face classroom is also legal in the online
classroom" using this justification to copy material that they might
hold up to their class, or show by video. It would be important to
review some of the specific cases and information compiled by the
Consortium for Educational Technology for University Systems (CETUS)
http://www.cetus.org/fairindex.html
(Fair Use of Copyrighted Works).
Finally, it is important to also think about the moral responsibility of
professors to model behaviors that clearly are legal and ethical is
presented in the article “An Ethical Edge in Education: Cognizance of
Copyrights and Copy Wrongs” (http://www.goehner.com/copyright.htm) where
Duane Goehner presents interesting questions for all to ponder. |

Keys Server (UA) – is the site for concurrent software at the University
of Alaska. Concurrent software usage means a limited number of users can
run the software at the same time. Key server software is only available
to computers on the UA network. To use key server software, you must
download and install a key client application. This program helps the
key server to keep track of who is using a certain piece of software at
any given time. The key server software will not function without the
key client installed.

Smart
Classroom Project (UAA)
Smart Classroom Project -- Updated 11/10 by Bogdan Hoanca
Considering four rooms of three different room types:
* seminar classroom (20-24 students) -- Room Identified for Project:
K210C
* medium Classroom (35-50 students) -- Rooms Identified for Project:
ADM142 and BMB108
* lecture Hall (50-100) -- Room Identified for Project: K166 (second
choice is AHS106)
Common components we believe each classroom should possess regardless of
category:
* Projector
* Computer (with access to share drives)
* Control Point
* Wall Mounted Screen
* Speakers
* DVD/VCR Combo
* Telephone with on campus dialing only (to be used for emergency
purposes as well as to contact technology support staff)
* Outlet for audio convener
* Wireless Access with on/off capability
* Whiteboard(s)
Additionally, we discussed the desire to have the following in lecture
halls:
* Document
Camera and Public Address System.
Other
technologies considered for lecture halls:
* Lecture recording software – Tegrity or similar
* Anonymous classroom survey device eInstruction.com or similar
It was recommended that Seminar facilities have digital camera/scanners
available. |

TEACH
Act
TEACH (Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization) Act
"The TEACH Act (Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization Act)
is a piece of legislation that offers instructors expanded opportunities
for using copyright-protected materials in distance-delivered and
electronically-enhanced courses. TEACH does not revise or undercut fair
use exemptions which apply to the use of copyright-protected materials
in instructional settings. Instead, it exists alongside the principles
of fair use in the Copyright Act, expanding the contexts and
circumstances under which copyright protected resources may be used by
teachers without special permission or licensing in the digital or
distance education environment."

Web-based Instruction
"Web-Based Instruction, also called Web-Based Training, is defined by
Clark (1996) as: 'Individualized instruction delivered over public or
private computer networks and displayed by a Web browser. WBT is not
downloaded CBT, but rather on-demand training stored in a server and
accessed across a network. Web-based training can be updated very
rapidly, and access to training controlled by the training provider.'"

WI-FI
WI-FI connections and security
Wi-Fi refers to wireless local area networking based on the IEEE 802.11
standard. There are several versions of the 802.11 standard in common
use. Differences between the standards include the frequencies used, the
range, and the data transmission rates possible. Perhaps the most common
is 802.11b which has a data transmission rate of up to 11 megabits per
second (Mbps). The 802.11g standard uses the same frequency range but
has a maximum of 54 Mbps. The 802.11a standard has a maximum 54Mbps
transfer rate, but uses a different frequency range than b and g.
